CPS 149S Fall 1999

For those of you considering classes for the Fall term, let me take a
moment to clarify any confusion about the two CPS 149S sections
available next semester. These sections are two separate half-credit
seminar courses, that happen to share the same name.

CPS 149S section 1 is a course about problem solving, specifically
solving problems typically seen on the annual ACM programming contest.
Duke is typically extremely well represented at these tournaments and
you could carry on the tradition. The structure of the course is
flexible, consisting mainly of solving interesting programming
problems and brain teasers each week (and discussing specific problem
solving methods). Students taking this course are expected to be
experienced programmers.

CPS 149S section 2 is a course about education, specifically teaching
computer science and using computer technology in education. The
course will focus on reading and discussing current research in the
area of computer science education as well as techniques for improving
teaching within our own courses here at Duke. Part of the semester
will be devoted to a project intended to improve the quality of
education within the department. Students taking this course are
expected to be experienced UTAs.

Both sections require a permission number to register and are limited
in enrollment to 18. If you are interested in either one, please send
me email (rcd@cs.duke.edu) indicating which course you would like to
take and your qualifications. I will mail out permission numbers next
week.

Thanks,
rcd
