heh, i figured this out last night at about 5....  it turns out that the gif
in the images directory has some weird transparency stuff going on.  you can
see it in xv, but try loading it up in gimp- all you'll see is the default
transparency mask backround.  i don't really know how to use gimp that well,
but something or other is weird here.  i just grabbed a couple of jpegs off
the net, and those loaded up fine.
