Re: instanceof

Why do we have a TA telling us that instanceof is ok when we're using an 
Observer (he even included example code) but a professor telling us that 
instanceof is the worst thing in Java programming.

Which one is right, and if one is showing us "good" example code with 
instanceof, is it really that bad?
