The Match

About 40 years ago, ``The Match'' was developed to rationally assign prospective residents (students) to residency programs (hospitals).

Students submit a rank-order list (ROL) to the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). Hospitals rank-order the students, too.

NRMP finds a match and publishes its results in mid March.

Legally binding!

Used since 1952 based on a 1962 (!) Gale and Shapley paper.
