Sept 6, 2014: Professor Rodger is back at Duke and will be teaching
the course now.
Professor Rodger will be out the first week or two to
deal with some medical issues and likely will not be able to respond to
email (see next item on where to ask questions).
She hopes to be back as soon as possible. In
the meantime, she is grateful for Prof. Astrachan who will be teaching the
course. Please ask him a lot of questions in class. He loves questions.
Questions: When you are not in class or lab, questions should be submitted to the class bulletin board, the
CompSci 101 Piazza site where
they will be answered for all to see. You can post anonymously if you
wish. Please try to be explicit as possible (Having trouble setting up your computer, please
tell us what type of computer, operating system, etc...).
The format of this class will consists of a mix of lectures and
problem solving during class. Some problems will be worked on paper and
other problems will be worked on laptops.
There is also a separate lab for this course.
August 26 is the first day of lecture. Complete the survey
before the first day! It is on the Sakai site for the class.
Labs start the first week! All labs are on Wednesdays or
Thursdays. Before going to the first lab, you need to attempt to install the course
software. See the Resources page for instructions.
Get as far as you can and then in lab you will get help finishing the
installation. We don't want anyone getting frustrated. If you find yourself
getting frustrated then wait and go to lab or go to consulting hours
(starting Tuesday) and get help there.
Should I bring a laptop to class/lab?
Please bring a laptop to class and lab if you have one.
Having your own laptop in class will help you with the
problem solving.
It will also be easier to have your
work on your own laptop.
If you don't have a laptop, you can pair up with someone who does have
a laptop. We do not have any laptops available for use.
HELP - How do I get help?
We will setup consulting hours and office hours, they will be posted on
the CompSci 101 web page starting sometime the first week of classes.
You can also post questions on Piazza (mentioned earlier).
