This course explores the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) challenges in computing through an introduction to and discussion of identity as a social construct, its impact on computing departments and organizations, and the resulting impact of technology on various identities.
No prior experience in computing or social science is required. This courses does not require or teach programming. It is designed to introduce you to a number of topics that blend social science with a better understanding of how and why technologies impact people in different ways. The only requirement is an open mind.
The course leverages news articles, podcast episodes, Ted Talks, interviews, documentaries, and books. All course material is available to students via the Duke Library or various websites at no charge. Students may choose to purchase any books at their discretion.
