Compsci 182s, Technical Websites
Each group has a topic around which protocols and
standards have developed, are evolving, and are possibly
changing.
Groups will develop a website for each topic, the websites will be done
in groups so at Duke the group from each section will develop
a separate website, though groups can collaborate on identifying issues
and topics (see stage one below) initially. The final website for the
course will reference all the individual technical
subject/websites that are developed, both at Duke and from the
students in China as warranted.
Topics are reproduced here for completeness:
- Domain Name System
- Bittorrent and p2p
-
PKI, Cryptography
-
Routing and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
- H264 v WebM
-
Health/Care Informatics
There are four phases to this project: phases one and two occur
the week of February 28-March 4; phases three and four occur the week
of March 14-18. The final evaluation of the website will be done by both
faculty and students on April 7 (as part of crowdsourcing).
Together the first four phases will each contribute a quarter of the
final grade for this technical website/writing. The final
evaluation of the website materials on April 7 will
be adjusted downward if the first phases are judged as lacking in effort
or below threshold in some way.
Phase I
This phase starts in class on March 1. Each group should
-
Identify
a group responsible for standardization/protocol related to the topic
and some of the key-players in the technical issue.
-
Identify at least two political or legal issues related to the topic.
-
Identify two ethical issues relate to the topic.
In addition, groups should identify a minimum of two websites and two
published articles relevant to the technical, legal, and
ethical issues related to the topic.
Develop these as a doc.google document that is shared with
owen dot astrachan AT gmail dot com and with shivnath AT
gmail dot com.
Phase II
Phase II will take place in class on March 3, groups at Duke meeting
separately. Each group will present the materials they submitted
from phase I, taking at most 5 minutes to present their
findings. Between Phase I and Phase II groups should identify
a possible interactive component to the website being developed and talk
about that interactive idea including what currently exists and
what might be developed given time.
Phase III
Phase III occurs during the week of March 14. During class on March 15
the two sections will meet separately to provide students time
to make plans for the last phase IV, below. The outcome of the
third phase is a plan and direction for developing final
materials that will be presented to both sections together in
in the final phase IV.
Phase IV
This occurs with both sections meeting together on March 22. Each group
will be take 5 minutes to present their website with a plan for the
final
development and an indication of changes and direction the final site
will have as it's evaluated on April 7. The primary purpose of phase
IV is to show a polished website and convey a direction of how the
website could and will expand.
We reserve the right to make changes in these phases as warranted
depending
on what happens in each phase.
