In-Class Activity: Impact of LLMs

LLMs (such as ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot) impact on Education concerns many people because of its potential to enable cheating or its convincing wrong answers, but start by focusing on how it might change things positively.

Submitting your Work

In groups, use this shared Google Doc to record your discussion about your past experiences and your predictions about the the future. For each, use principles to justify why you think it is "good" or "bad".

In your groups, each person should take on the following roles:

• Facilitator: manages the group to stay on task, be aware of time constraints for the overall discussion, and that there is room for everyone in the conversation
• Recorder: takes notes on the discussion, including keeping track of who initiated major ideas within the discussion
• Representative: represents the group in reporting back to the class and for any discussions between groups

Specifications

LLMs have many potential positive impacts on Education such as:

• personalized educational materials
• providing immediate feedback
• fitting problems to the ability of the student
• providing brainstorming material
• more easily creating inclusive educational materials

As a group, brainstorm learning experiences that utilize positive aspects of LLMs and then pick two to design in detail and present. For each learning experience, note:

• any assumptions you make about what improvements need to be made to LLMs (such as "no hallucinations" or "access to up-to-date or special purpose information")
• whether it matters if the LLM is proprietary or Open Source, in the Cloud or "local"

Also, justify why you think your learning experience will be good using principles from any of the theories presented, or the readings, or your own personal study of the topic. You may use ChatGPT to help you with this task :)

As a group, pick one of the other team's proposed experiences and discuss its potential pitfalls, biases, exclusions, or other ethical concerns. Further note:

• any concerns you have about its assumptions (such as "no hallucinations is an impossible goal")
• any privacy considerations you may have regarding what data is stored or how it might be used

Also, justify your concerns using principles from any of the theories presented, or the readings, or your own personal study of the topic. You may use ChatGPT to help you with this task as well :)
