In this course, each lecture includes a required reading on human-centered security. Students are expected to read the assigned material and submit a thoughtful commentary for each session. The required reading and the two corresponding commentary prompts will be selected by the designated discussion leader(s) at least one week in advance. As the non-lead student, for each lead-selected prompt, you are expected to submit an in-depth commentary showing a clear understanding of the required reading. An example discussion prompt may ask: ``The paper discusses the roles of designers and developers in ensuring AI safety. In your opinion, do policymakers have additional responsibilities in this area, and what might those responsibilities entail?'' As non-lead students, your objective is to craft a comprehensive response, spanning 3 to 6 sentences, to the given prompt.
For the non-lead students, commentaries must be submitted by 7 p.m. on the day preceding the session. In addition to the required readings for each session, I have identified two optional readings that students may explore to deepen their understanding of the session’s topic. Engaging with these supplementary materials can enhance your grasp of the subject matter and provide broader perspectives. While not mandatory, reviewing these optional readings is encouraged for those interested in further exploration of the course content. The complete list of the optional readings is available on the course schedule.
The assigned grade for your submitted reading commentary will be one of the following:
Your two lowest reading grades will be dropped. There is no deadline extension policy for reading assignments, and they are expected to be submitted by 7 p.m. the day before the class. However, life is full of surprises, which requires flexibility. So if, for any reason, you find it challenging to submit your assignments in time, please reach out to the instructor to discuss possible accommodations. Your health and happiness are my most important goals, so if you are in distress about this class (or anything else) and you would like to talk about it, the instructor is always available to chat. Just let me know!
